Sunlight: 11 to 12 hours of direct sunlight. Or as much as possible
PH: 6.0 to 6.5
Watering: Once a week if you have good soil. Water deeply and thoroughly,
Planting: Seed or slips .Your choice.
Leaves: The leaves are your green onions son keep and eat those.
Partner plants: Strawberries beats lettuce and peppers are all excellent companion plants.
Asparagus. Legumes and Sage are the worst plants to pair with onions.
See the companion plant chart below posted by a Reddit user
You can look these up. Search for companion planting for whatever plant your interested in. One of my companion pairs is fava beans and potatoes. They are thriving and growing together.
The smooth leaves are fava beans and the wrinkly ones are potatoes.
Topping: To top or not to top, that is the question. I’ve seen some videos where they say to top the onions and others where they do not . Topping is when you cut the leaves back. Its said in some instances that when the leaves start to fall over you can cut them back to 4 inches. Don’t throw this away, this is your green onion. Some folks say it helps other say it does not. The idea is to remove some of the leaf material to put more energy into the onion itself. It is supposed to grow bigger onions. Its sounds logical but by cutting the leaves you reduce photosynthesis. When I try this again I will do both and see what works best.
What I can say with certainty is that planting onions and beans or peas together with potato’s is great for both plants. This I have done.
Fun fact: The number of leaves indicate how many layers the onion has.
Storage: Onions can be store for up to 6 months. You need to let them dry out in indirect sun until the outer skin is like paper. The store them in a cool dark place.
Not the fridge!
You can plant green onions from the store.
Cut the greens off and eat them. Then plant the white roots. They will split and start growing immediately. Cut them again at 6 inches and they will split again and continue to grow. Most veggies from the grocery store will not grow. But green onions will . I promise. I have done this myself 10 or 12 times.
A wonderful addition to almost any dish. Sautéed or raw. I like to do both when I used them.
Don’t forget, lets grow together.
Great chart and very helpful
